When to Go

Clovis sits at about 1,300 metres on the southern High Plains, with a semi-arid climate of hot dry summers and cold dry winters. Spring (March–May) can be windy with occasional dust storms but is otherwise pleasant. Summer (June–August) brings highs of 32–36°C and most of the year's thunderstorms, often dramatic late-afternoon affairs. Autumn (September–November) is the most reliable travel season — long sunny days, cool nights, and the best light for photography.

Winters are cold but not severe; daytime highs run 8–14°C, with the occasional Arctic front pulling temperatures briefly below freezing. The Clovis Music Festival in early September celebrates the town's Buddy Holly heritage and is the busiest weekend of the year — book lodging well ahead.
