Pueblo Alto

Pueblo Alto sits on the mesa top above the canyon, reached by a permit-only trail that climbs through a crack in the cliff behind Kin Kletso. The walk-up is the great Chaco experience: you scramble up a sandstone fissure, emerge onto open mesa, and follow cairns across slickrock with the whole canyon falling away to your right.

The pueblo itself is ruined down to its foundations, but the long view back over Pueblo Bonito from the cliff overlook — a thousand feet above the canyon floor — is the picture you remember. Allow three to four hours for the full loop, more in summer heat.

A story
Pueblo Alto sits at the convergence point of the Chacoan road system — at least six engineered roads, 9 metres wide and dead straight, fanned out from here across the desert to outlying great houses up to 80 km away. Why people who had no wheels or pack animals laid out arterial highways is one of the enduring puzzles of Chaco.
