The main reason to come to Nageezi is Chaco Culture National Historical Park, one of the most impressive archaeological sites in North America. Chaco Canyon was a major center of ancestral Puebloan culture between AD 850 and 1250 -- a hub of ceremony, trade, and administration for the prehistoric Four Corners area, unlike anything before or since.
The Chacoan people combined pre-planned architectural designs, astronomical alignments, geometry, and engineering to create a spectacular ancient urban center. The monumental great houses and ceremonial kivas still amaze visitors a thousand years later. The sites are part of the sacred homeland of Pueblo, Hopi, and Navajo peoples, all of whom continue to honor them.
Chaco is remote and isolated, with a rough dirt access road and few amenities. Come prepared with food, water, and fuel. The rewards are unlimited.
