Taos has no commercial airport. The nearest is Albuquerque International Sunport, about 200 kilometres south — a 2.5-hour drive via US 285 and NM 68. The drive through the Rio Grande Gorge on the last stretch is dramatic; allow extra time to stop.
From Santa Fe, the drive takes about 75 minutes via the "High Road" through the mountain villages of Truchas and Trampas — worth taking if you have time — or about 90 minutes via the lower Rio Grande canyon route, which is more direct. There is a shuttle service (the Taos Express) between Taos and Santa Fe on weekends. Otherwise, a car is essentially necessary for exploring the area.
