When to Go

Taos sits at 2,100 metres altitude, which keeps summers pleasant — warm and sunny with afternoon thunderstorms that roll in from the mountains most days in July and August. Spring (April–May) is good weather-wise but can be windy. Autumn is generally considered the best time: clear skies, cooler temperatures, and the aspens turning gold in the mountains above town.

Winter brings skiing at Taos Ski Valley (December to March), with significant snow above 3,000 metres. The town itself gets snow but usually less than the mountain. The Pueblo Christmas celebrations are worth seeing if you are in the area in late December — Taos Pueblo holds traditional dances open to visitors.

Summer is the peak tourist season; reservations are advisable for restaurants and galleries in July and August.
