Mabel Dodge Luhan House

The Big House, as locals call it, was the home of Mabel Dodge Luhan — the New York socialite who moved to Taos in 1918, married a Pueblo man named Tony Luhan, and proceeded to invite half the American and European cultural world to visit. D.H. Lawrence wrote here. Georgia O'Keeffe stayed here. Ansel Adams, Willa Cather, and Carl Jung all came through.

The house is now a bed and breakfast, which means you can actually stay in the rooms where Lawrence and others worked. The building is a rambling adobe with Pueblo-style architecture and a distinctive painted interior. Even if you don't stay, the house is open for tours and it's worth understanding the role Mabel Dodge Luhan played in establishing Taos as a cultural destination and in drawing attention to Pueblo life and rights.
