Volkswagen on a Smokestack

A real Beetle perched 80 feet up on an old factory chimney

Visible from miles around, the Volkswagen Beetle perched on top of an 80-foot brick smokestack at Bill Luck's Volkswagen has been Amsterdam's most idiosyncratic landmark since 1981. The car was hoisted up by a borrowed crane as a piece of advertising for the family-run garage below, and was never taken down.

It is on the western edge of town along Route 5. You can park at the garage for a closer look; the Beetle's continued presence after more than four decades is half the point. A staple of upstate "weird America" road-trip checklists.

A story
In 1981 the owner of Bill Luck's Volkswagen repair shop persuaded a local crane operator to lift a stripped-down Beetle to the top of the brick smokestack that towers over the garage. The car has been welded in place ever since — pointing skyward, paint peeling, slowly becoming an unofficial symbol of upstate New York roadside whimsy. The shop is still in business underneath.
