Almost everything worth doing at Chautauqua happens within the gates of the Chautauqua Institution — the walkable, car-free enclave on the western shore of Chautauqua Lake that has been the reason to come here since 1874. A day pass or season ticket is required to enter during the nine-week summer program. Outside the season, the main draw is the lake itself and the surrounding countryside.
