When to Go

Chautauqua is definitively seasonal. The Institution opens for its nine-week program in late June and closes in late August. During those nine weeks, the campus is alive with programming from 7am through late evening; outside the season, it is largely quiet and much of the accommodation closes.

Each week of the season has a theme around which the morning lectures, afternoon workshops, and some evening performances are organized. Themes in recent years have covered democracy, technology, climate, health, and the arts. Checking the weekly theme before booking is worthwhile — a week built around a subject you care deeply about will be different from a general visit. The Saturday changeover between weeks is when the cottage owners arrive and depart, and the campus is at its most social.

For opera, check the production schedule — specific performances are easier to plan around than the general program. The peak weeks in mid-July and early August tend to have the most prestigious speakers and the busiest social calendar, and accommodation books up furthest in advance.

If you are visiting the region outside the season, Chautauqua Lake and the surrounding countryside are pleasant through spring and autumn. The county is known for its wine production — there are several small vineyards along the lake shore that are open year-round.
