Things to Do

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum is the reason most people come, and it justifies the trip even if you're only a casual fan — it's a well-conceived museum about American cultural history as much as a sport. Doubleday Field, a block away, is worth a look if a game is on.

The cultural attractions north of the village are underrated. The Fenimore Art Museum has a first-rate collection of American Indian art, and the adjacent Farmers' Museum — including the Cardiff Giant — is one of the best living history complexes in the Northeast.

Otsego Lake is beautiful and swimmable in summer. Hyde Hall, at the northern end of the lake, is a remarkable Federal-period country house worth the short drive. The Fly Creek Cider Mill is a good destination in fall foliage season.
