Moosewood Restaurant

Worker-owned vegetarian cooperative running since 1973

Moosewood opened in 1973, when vegetarian food in America meant brown rice and apology. The Moosewood Cookbook, written by founding member Mollie Katzen and now in its umpteenth printing, made the restaurant nationally famous. The food is still good — fresh, seasonal, occasionally adventurous, served in a low-key dining room in the old Dewitt Mall.

The menu changes daily; check the chalkboard. Soups are the strongest course — get one. The wine list is short and well-chosen; Finger Lakes Riesling is the obvious pairing. The bistro is in DeWitt Mall, 215 N Cayuga St; reservations recommended on weekends.
