High Falls Gorge is a quick, satisfying stop on the road between Lake Placid and Whiteface Mountain. The Ausable River drops through a narrow rock gorge here, and a network of paths, bridges, and viewing platforms lets you see several waterfalls without committing to a long Adirondack hike.
The attraction is privately run and ticketed, so it is not wilderness in the backcountry sense. Still, it works well if you want dramatic water, dark rock, and forest with minimal logistics, especially for families or travellers who cannot take on the steeper High Peaks trails. In winter the gorge can be visited on snowshoes when conditions allow.
