Lake Placid Olympic Museum

The Lake Placid Olympic Museum, attached to the Herb Brooks Arena on Main Street, documents both the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics held here. The permanent collection includes equipment, uniforms, medals, photographs, and film footage from both games, with particular attention to the stories behind the American gold medals and the "Miracle on Ice" hockey victory over the Soviets in 1980.

The museum is compact but well-curated and makes the Olympic history tangible in a way that simply skating on the rink does not. The 1932 games section is particularly interesting for its photographs of how the games looked before modern television coverage, marketing, and security infrastructure. The museum is the best starting point for a day exploring the Olympic venues.

A story
Lake Placid is one of only four cities to have hosted the Winter Olympics twice — in 1932 and 1980. The 1932 games were almost cancelled when warm weather produced no natural snow, and much of the bobsled run had to be constructed from scratch with imported ice and straw. The organizers had to import snow from Canada by train.
