Bechtler Museum of Modern Art

The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art holds the personal art collection of Swiss industrialist Andreas Bechtler, donated to Charlotte and opened in 2009. The collection is remarkable: works by Picasso, Matisse, Miro, Calder, Giacometti, and Warhol, assembled by a European collector with genuine taste over several decades. It is one of the strongest collections of mid-20th-century European modernism in the American Southeast, and a genuine surprise in a city more associated with banking and racing.

The building was designed by Mario Botta and sits at the corner of Tryon and Stonewall, directly in front of Bank of America Stadium. The permanent collection is supplemented by travelling exhibitions. For anyone interested in modern art, the Bechtler is the highlight of Charlotte's cultural district.
