Charlotte is the largest city in North Carolina, and there is plenty to keep you busy.
The US National Whitewater Center on the Catawba River offers whitewater rafting, kayaking, rock climbing, zip lines, and mountain biking -- all within city limits. It is one of the most unusual urban outdoor facilities in the country and worth a visit even if you just want to watch from the restaurant patio.
Freedom Park is the city's most popular green space, with a lake, walking trails, and summer concerts. The nearby Mint Museum Randolph houses an impressive collection of American, European, and pre-Columbian art.
Charlotte is NASCAR country. Many racing teams are headquartered in and around the city, and the Charlotte Motor Speedway in nearby Concord hosts major races. Several race shops offer tours -- the Hendrick Motorsports Museum is free and open to the public on weekdays.
The SEA LIFE Charlotte-Concord Aquarium at Concord Mills is a good family outing, with sharks, rays, seahorses, and interactive touch pools. The adjacent shopping complex is one of the largest in the Southeast.
