Discovery Place Science is one of the strongest hands-on science museums in the Southeast, a genuinely absorbing place for adults as well as children. Located in Uptown Charlotte, the museum covers physics, biology, technology, and environmental science through interactive exhibits designed for engagement rather than passive reading. The IMAX dome theatre shows both science documentaries and commercial films, and the planetarium runs regular shows.
The museum has been expanding and modernizing for decades, and its current exhibits on climate science, chemistry, and human biology are well-designed and current. It draws school groups on weekdays but is manageable on weekends. Families travelling with children should put it near the top of the Charlotte list. Discovery Place also operates a Nature center in University City and a Science Center in Huntersville.
