Freedom Park

Freedom Park is Charlotte's most popular public green space, 98 acres in the Dilworth neighbourhood about two kilometres south of Uptown. The park centres on a small lake with a paved walking loop, grassy slopes popular for picnicking, a children's play area, and tennis courts. In summer it hosts outdoor concerts on the amphitheatre stage. The surrounding Dilworth neighbourhood is one of Charlotte's oldest and most attractive residential areas, with early-20th-century bungalows and tree-lined streets worth exploring after a walk in the park.

The park is also home to Charlotte's Vietnam Veterans Memorial and a veterans recognition wall. The Mint Museum Randolph and the Charlotte Nature Museum are a short walk away, making the whole area a good half-day on foot. Freedom Park and its surroundings are probably the best place in Charlotte to understand what the city looks like at the residential scale, away from the glass towers of Uptown.
