Bird Island Reserve is a 1,400-acre protected barrier island at the western tip of Ocean Isle Beach, accessible only on foot — there are no roads, no bridges, and no development. A walk of roughly 1.5 miles along the beach from the Ocean Isle western parking area brings you here, and the contrast with the rest of the Carolina coast is immediate: nothing but dunes, maritime shrubs, shorebirds, and sea.
The island is one of the last completely undeveloped barrier islands in North Carolina. Brown pelicans, royal terns, American oystercatchers, and various shorebirds nest and forage here throughout the year, with migratory species adding to the count in spring and autumn. The walk out and back takes 2–3 hours at a relaxed pace; bring water and wear sunscreen.
