Ocean Isle Beach is best enjoyed simply — sun, water, and the particular pleasure of a beach that hasn't been overdeveloped. The Ocean Isle Pier is the social hub of the island, a good spot for fishing or just watching pelicans work the surf. At the west end of the island, Bird Island Reserve — accessible only on foot — offers an experience of the North Carolina coast as it used to look everywhere. The Kindred Spirit Mailbox on Bird Island is a well-known local tradition.
The Intracoastal Waterway on the back side of the island is ideal for kayaking and paddleboarding — calm water, good wildlife, and regular dolphin sightings. The Museum of Coastal Carolina is worth an hour, especially for families with young children. The neighbouring island of Sunset Beach to the west is a pleasant half-day excursion — even quieter, with tidal flats and the western edge of the same undeveloped barrier island chain.
