Cherohala Skyway

The Cherohala Skyway is a 43-mile National Scenic Byway that runs from Robbinsville south to Tellico Plains in Tennessee, climbing through the southern Appalachians to elevations above 5,400 feet. The views are extraordinary — a succession of mountain ridges extending in every direction, with the road hugging the contours and passing through dense hardwood forest.

It sees a fraction of the Blue Ridge Parkway's traffic, making it a genuine pleasure for both driving and motorcycling. The road is popular with motorcyclists who seek out less-crowded routes; on weekday mornings you can drive for long stretches without passing another vehicle. In autumn the foliage is spectacular. There are several overlooks and picnic areas along the route; a few short trails lead into the surrounding forest.

A story
The name Cherohala is a portmanteau of the two national forests the road crosses: the Cherokee National Forest in Tennessee and the Nantahala National Forest in North Carolina. The highway took more than 34 years to plan and build and was completed in 1996 at a cost of $100 million. Despite this investment, it receives far less traffic than the Blue Ridge Parkway — which is precisely what makes it so good.
