Robbinsville

Remote Smoky Mountains county seat near Lake Santeetlah, Fontana Lake, and the Cherohala Skyway.

Robbinsville is the county seat of Graham County, tucked into one of the most remote and scenic corners of the Smoky Mountains. This is genuine mountain country — untouched forests, quiet lakes, and deep valleys at prices that are surprisingly affordable compared to the more developed mountain towns.

Lake Santeetlah and Fontana Lake offer boating, fishing, and kayaking in settings that feel far from civilisation. The Cherohala Skyway, a scenic highway running from Robbinsville into Tennessee, rivals the Blue Ridge Parkway for mountain views but sees a fraction of the traffic.

The Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest preserves one of the last old-growth temperate forests in the eastern United States — trees up to 400 years old, never logged. The Cheoah Dam, made briefly famous by the film The Fugitive, stands at the head of a whitewater gorge that kayakers consider one of the finest runs in the southeast.

Guide

Getting There

Robbinsville is reached by US 129 from the north (connecting to Knoxville, Tennessee) or from the south (from Murphy, NC). US 19 approaches from the east through Andrews. The nearest commercial airport is in Knoxville (McGhee Tyson, about 90 minutes north) or Asheville (about 2 hours east).

There is no public transport to Robbinsville. A car is essential — this is genuinely remote mountain country. The mountain roads are twisting but well-maintained; GPS directions are generally reliable, though signal can drop in the deeper valleys. Fill up with petrol before leaving the main roads; fuel options in Graham County are limited.
