Folkmoot USA

Folkmoot USA is an international folk dance and music festival held in Waynesville and surrounding Haywood County communities each July. Dance and music troupes from a dozen or more countries perform traditional and contemporary folk dance in venues across the mountain towns of western North Carolina.

The performances are held in parks, civic centres, and outdoor stages — some free, some ticketed. The parade of nations through downtown Waynesville is the most visible event. For a town of its size, the calibre and diversity of the international acts is extraordinary. If you're anywhere in western North Carolina in mid-July, it's worth making the detour.

A story
Folkmoot was founded in 1984 on the model of the Norwegian Telemark Festival, brought to Haywood County by Stuart Auerbach after he experienced the European folk festival circuit. The name comes from the Old English word for a gathering of people — moot — combined with folk. It has operated continuously since its founding, becoming one of the longest-running international folk festivals in the United States.
