Schmidt's is the most famous restaurant in German Village and one of the most popular in Columbus, which means it can have a wait on weekend evenings. It occupies a converted 19th-century meat-packing building and serves straightforward German-American food — sausage platters, schnitzel, sauerkraut, red cabbage — in enormous portions. The beer selection is adequate; the sausages are very good.
The real draw, which regulars will mention first, is the cream puff: an enormous choux pastry filled with a mountain of whipped cream that has been on the menu for decades. It is genuinely excellent and large enough to share. Schmidt's has been in the same family since 1886, and they know their sausages. Come for lunch to avoid the dinner crowds.
