The downtown core of Delaware is compact and largely intact, with a Main Street corridor lined with nineteenth-century commercial buildings in Greek Revival and Victorian styles. Several blocks along Winter Street and Sandusky Street are on the National Register of Historic Places, preserving a townscape that has changed little in the last century and a half.
The buildings are genuinely worth looking at: ornate cornices, cast-iron storefronts, and the occasional Gothic Revival flourish sit alongside plainer Federal-style facades from the 1840s and 1850s. The Strand Theatre on East Winter Street, a historic cinema that has been in operation since the early twentieth century, anchors the block nearest the Ohio Wesleyan campus.
A slow walk through downtown takes about 45 minutes. The streets are quiet enough that you can look up without traffic getting in the way.
