Delaware is a small city about half an hour north of Columbus, Ohio. It has a handsome downtown of nineteenth-century buildings in Greek Revival and Victorian styles, several streets of stately homes on the National Register of Historic Places, and the kind of quiet charm that rewards a slow walk.
The town is the birthplace of Rutherford B. Hayes, the 19th President of the United States, though the actual house is long gone — only a plaque outside a gas station marks the spot. Ohio Wesleyan University occupies a leafy campus in the centre of town; its oldest building, Elliott Hall (1833), is a fine example of Greek Revival architecture.
Harness racing fans know Delaware as the home of the Little Brown Jug, one of the premier events in the sport. The race has been held here every year since 1946 as part of the Delaware County Fair, drawing large crowds each September.
