Merry-Go-Round Museum

The Merry-Go-Round Museum lives in a handsome 1927 federal-style building that was originally a US Post Office — a domed circular space that turned out to be ideal for displaying a working carousel. Exhibits trace the history of carousels from the European originals through the American golden age (1880–1930) and the recent restoration revival, with original carved horses, menagerie animals, and band-organ instruments.

The working carousel in the centre — restored from a 1939 original — is the most fun element; admission includes unlimited rides. A small but well-judged museum, easily combined with the Sandusky downtown waterfront on a non-Cedar Point day. Open daily in summer, weekends in winter.

A story
The centrepiece of the museum is a fully restored 1939 Allan Herschell carousel that still runs — every visitor's admission includes a ride. The museum's location was chosen because Sandusky was the home of Daniel Müller, one of the great American carousel carvers of the early 20th century.
