Jackson County Courthouse

Art Deco-influenced 1939 county courthouse, the architectural centrepiece of downtown

The Jackson County Courthouse stands on the central block of downtown Altus, at Main Street and Broadway. Completed in 1939 with Public Works Administration funds during the New Deal, it is one of the better small-town courthouses in southwestern Oklahoma — a stone-clad three-storey building with modest Art Deco styling, a clock tower, and a square plaza out front that hosts the county's main civic events.

It is still the working county courthouse and is open during office hours; the lobby and stairway, with their original brass fittings and inscribed limestone, are worth a quick look if you happen to be passing during a weekday. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
