Altus is a small city in southwestern Oklahoma, serving as the county seat of Jackson County and a regional hub for the surrounding cotton and wheat country. The dominant presence is Altus Air Force Base, which trains pilots for the C-17 Globemaster and KC-46 tanker and has been the town's economic backbone since World War II.
The town itself is quiet and practical. The Museum of the Western Prairie on Memorial Drive does a good job of telling the story of settlement and agriculture in this corner of Oklahoma, from the Kiowa and Comanche era through the Dust Bowl. The Art Deco Jackson County Courthouse anchors downtown, and Altus City Park has a small lake, walking trails, and a public pool that sees heavy use in the scorching summers -- temperatures here regularly push past 100 degrees from June through August.
Quartz Mountain State Park, about 30 miles north, is worth the drive. It sits on the shore of Lake Altus-Lugert, surrounded by granite outcroppings and scrubby hills, and offers hiking, swimming, and surprisingly good scenery for the Oklahoma plains. The park also hosts the annual Oklahoma Arts Institute each summer.
