W. C. Baker House

Distinctive 1920s airplane-bungalow style house on the National Register

The W. C. Baker House at 301 East Commerce is one of the few intact examples of an "airplane bungalow" in this part of Oklahoma — a style of Craftsman house with a smaller second-storey room (the "cockpit") sitting in the middle of a wider one-storey base. The form spread to the southern Great Plains in the early 1920s and most surviving examples have been remodelled past recognition; this one has not.

The house is private and not open to visitors, but it is worth a brief look from the street if you are exploring downtown Altus on foot. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is one of the older intact residences in the city.
