When to Go

Spring and autumn are the best seasons in Broken Bow. April and May bring dogwood blossoms, mild temperatures, and the start of trout-stocking season; the mountains turn green and the rivers run high from spring rains.

Late October and early November are the headline weeks for visitors, when the hardwood forests turn gold, red, and rust against the dark pines. Weekends in peak colour are extremely busy — book cabins months in advance.

Summer is hot and humid, often pushing into the high 90s, but the lake and river make heat easy to escape. Winter is mild compared with the rest of Oklahoma, with occasional cold snaps; it is also when the bald eagles arrive, roosting along the river from late November through February.
