Patriot Park War Memorial

Patriot Park sits opposite the Del City Community Center and pays tribute to the local residents who served in the armed forces. The centrepiece is a tall reddish granite obelisk inscribed with the names of the 21 Del City veterans who died in service — from World War II through Iraq.

The memorial grounds also include a decommissioned armoured personnel carrier and a Fallen Soldier Battle Cross, the battlefield tribute of a rifle driven stock-first into the earth with a helmet balanced on top. Given how closely Del City has been tied to Tinker Air Force Base since the 1940s, the memorial carries real weight for the community. The park is quiet and well-maintained, and worth a few minutes of reflection if you are in the neighbourhood.

A story
The memorial honours 21 Del City residents who died in service — a heavy number for a city of 22,000. The Fallen Soldier Battle Cross, a rifle planted barrel-down in a pair of boots with a helmet resting on the stock, was dedicated in November 2010. It is a striking image, and a reminder that this military suburb has paid real costs across multiple wars.
