Del City

Working-class Oklahoma City suburb shaped by neighbouring Tinker Air Force Base and military families.

Del City is a working-class suburb of about 22,000 people on the southeast side of Oklahoma City, bordered by Tinker Air Force Base to the east. The base, one of the largest Air Force installations in the country, has shaped the community since the 1940s, and many Del City residents have ties to the military.

The city is not a tourist destination, but it has a few points of interest for visitors in the Oklahoma City metro area. The community is home to a cluster of Vietnamese and Asian restaurants along SE 29th Street, reflecting the diverse population that settled near the base. Del City also sits close to the intersection of I-40 and I-35, making it a practical if unremarkable place to stop when driving through central Oklahoma.

Eagle Lake Park in the north of the city is a pleasant spot for walking and fishing, and a surprisingly good urban birding site. The Patriot Park War Memorial near the Community Center honours the 21 Del City residents who died in military service. Country music enthusiasts may want to seek out the Oklahoma Country & Western Music Hall of Fame, which hosts live bluegrass and country events.

For anything more substantial -- museums, nightlife, dining -- you are better off heading into downtown Oklahoma City, which is about 15 minutes west.

Getting There

Del City is immediately east of Oklahoma City, about 15 minutes from downtown by car. It sits at the intersection of I-40 and SE 15th Street, and is easily accessed from the I-40/I-35 junction — one of the main crossroads for long-distance driving through central Oklahoma.

The nearest airport is Will Rogers World Airport, about 25 minutes west. There is no commercial rail service to Del City. Oklahoma City's public bus network (EMBARK) serves parts of the metro area, but a car is the practical way to get around Del City itself.
