The old Route 66 alignment runs through the centre of Elk City and can be driven through the downtown to get a sense of what the Mother Road looked like in its prime. Look for the original brick pavement that survives on some sections, the vintage neon signs, and the motel architecture that hasn't changed since the 1950s. The Business Route through downtown is the most intact section.
West of Elk City toward Sayre, the original highway parallels I-40 in places and the old surface road passes through open grassland with almost no traffic — a genuinely atmospheric drive. East toward Clinton, the historic alignment passes through Canute and Foss, both of which have small communities built entirely around the original highway economy of motels, diners, and service stations.
