Elk City is one of the more interesting stops on the Oklahoma stretch of Route 66, primarily because of its museum complex, which takes the broader story of the Mother Road seriously rather than just selling nostalgia. The town itself is a classic western Oklahoma market town — cattle, oil, and wheat — and the landscape of pump jacks and open sky is as much a part of the experience as the museum buildings.
