Washita National Wildlife Refuge protects marshy ground and open water around Foss Lake, making it one of the better birding stops in western Oklahoma. It is a quiet place rather than a built-up attraction, but the mix of lake, grassland, and wetland gives travellers a good reason to pause outside Elk City.
