Black Gold Park and Historical Marker

Black Gold Park marks the site of the Glenn Pool oil field, the 1905 discovery that made Tulsa rich. A historical marker near the park documents the find by wildcatters Robert Galbreath and Frank Chesley on land belonging to Creek Indian Ida E. Glenn — whose name the field carries to this day.

The park itself is modest, but the historical marker tells the story well. Standing here, it is easy to understand how a single oil gusher on the prairie changed the fortunes of an entire region. The Glenn Pool field ultimately produced over 340 million barrels of oil, and traces of production equipment are still visible in the surrounding area.

A story
The Glenn Pool oil discovery on 22 November 1905 was so rich that daily production quickly exceeded 120,000 barrels — more oil than could be moved to market, so drillers simply let it pool on the surface. The revenue financed Tulsa's extraordinary run of Art Deco architecture in the 1920s, earning the city its nickname as the "Oil Capital of the World."
