Crystal Theatre

1920s small-town theatre that anchors the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival

The Crystal Theatre on Broadway is the only intact pre-war theatre left in Okemah, and the centrepiece of the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival every July. The brick-and-stucco facade and the period marquee have been carefully preserved, and inside there is a single sloping floor of seats, a small stage, and excellent acoustics for an audience of about three hundred.

Outside of the festival, the Crystal hosts touring folk and bluegrass acts and the occasional movie. The volunteer-run model means the schedule is patchy — check ahead. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

A story
When the Crystal opened in 1929 it was a vaudeville and silent film house, then a movie theatre, and by the 1970s it was closing down like so many small-town picture palaces. Volunteers bought and restored it in time for the first Woody Guthrie Folk Festival in 1998 — without the Crystal, the festival probably would not exist.
