Talimena National Scenic Byway

The Talimena Scenic Byway runs 54 miles along the spine of the Winding Stair Mountains from Talihina, Oklahoma, to Mena, Arkansas. It is one of the great drives of the southern United States, with overlooks every few miles and almost no commercial development the entire length. The northern end is about 45 minutes south of Poteau.

Mid-October is peak season: the hardwood forest turns red and gold across both states, and the byway becomes briefly busy. The rest of the year you can drive long stretches without meeting another car. Allow at least half a day round-trip from Poteau, longer if you stop at the overlooks or the small state parks along the route.

A story
The byway was built in the 1960s as a stripped-down version of a much grander Roosevelt-era plan to turn the Ouachitas into a national park. The park never happened; the road, climbing 54 miles of empty ridgeline with almost no houses or services, did.
