Route 66 Through Warr Acres

The original alignment of Route 66 passes through Warr Acres along NW 39th Street and NW 10th Street, heading west toward Yukon and El Reno before continuing across Oklahoma. This stretch is not one of the more scenic sections of the Mother Road — it runs through a built-up suburban corridor — but for Route 66 completists, it is part of the historic alignment.

Some of the old roadside businesses along this stretch have survived, including a scatter of vintage motels and diners that date from the highway's heyday in the mid-20th century. The section through Warr Acres connects to the more interesting Route 66 experiences in downtown Oklahoma City to the east and in the open countryside west of the metro area.

A story
Warr Acres incorporated in 1948 specifically to avoid annexation by Oklahoma City, making it one of the many "defensive incorporations" that characterise the suburban patchwork of the American Midwest. The Route 66 alignment running through the city predates its incorporation by two decades — the highway was established in 1926 when this was still open farmland on the edge of the city.
