The present Cape Arago Light is the third lighthouse built on this site. The first was established in 1866 to guide the heavy lumber traffic out of Coos Bay; that structure was replaced in 1909, and the current octagonal 44-foot concrete tower dates from 1934. Renovated by the Coast Guard in 1993, the original Fourth Order Fresnel lens was replaced by a modern beacon. The station is not open to the public, but it can be seen clearly from Sunset Bay State Park, just south of Charleston.
