Getting Around

Florence is a car town. Old Town is compact and walkable, but getting to the dunes, Sea Lion Caves, Heceta Head, or Honeyman State Park requires a vehicle. Highway 101 is the spine of the town and connects everything north and south.

Dune buggy and ATV rentals are available from several operators along Highway 101, and this is genuinely the best way to access the open sand sheets in the Oregon Dunes. Companies typically provide helmets and brief instruction; no licence is required for off-highway vehicles on designated dune areas.

Bicycle touring is possible along Highway 101 — it has a shoulder — but the highway carries fast traffic and is not relaxed. The Old Town area and the paved paths in Honeyman State Park are better for casual cycling.

There is no public transport within Florence. Coastal Express buses stop on Highway 101 but do not serve the attractions.
