Oregon Coast Aquarium

The Oregon Coast Aquarium sits on the south side of Yaquina Bay and is widely considered one of the best aquariums on the West Coast. The outdoor exhibits — sea otters, harbor seals, a vast seabird aviary, and tide-pool tanks — mirror the habitats just outside the door, while a series of acrylic tunnels lets you walk under the open-water tank surrounded by sharks, rockfish, and rays.

Plan for half a day. The Passages of the Deep walk-through, the Pacific octopus, and the puffin enclosure are highlights. Open daily; expect crowds in summer school holidays. Adults around $30; tickets cheaper if booked online. Combined tickets with the Hatfield Marine Science Center next door are available.

A story
In 1996 the aquarium became the temporary home of Keiko, the orca who starred in the film "Free Willy". A custom 2-million-gallon tank was built for him on site, and over two years he relearned how to feed himself before being moved to Iceland and eventually released. The outline of his old pen is still visible from the boardwalk.
