Yaquina Bay Lighthouse

Yaquina Bay Lighthouse is the oldest standing structure in Newport — a small two-story white timber house with a stubby tower built directly on top, set above the north entrance to the bay. It was decommissioned long ago but restored to its 1870s appearance and is open as a museum.

Inside, period furniture and exhibits cover the lives of the keepers. Outside, the gardens look out toward the river mouth and Yaquina Bay Bridge to the south. Free admission; small donation suggested. Pair with a short walk through Yaquina Bay State Recreation Site on the way.

A story
The lighthouse was only operational for three years (1871–1874) before being replaced by Yaquina Head's newer, brighter light up the coast. Almost demolished in the 1940s, it was rescued by the Lincoln County Historical Society and is now reputed to be haunted — a local legend about a young woman murdered in the wooden tower keeps tour groups delighted.
