Neahkahnie Mountain

The most dramatic headland on the North Oregon Coast, rising steeply from the sea to 1,631 feet. The main trail (about 3 miles round trip from the upper trailhead off US-101) climbs through old-growth Sitka spruce before opening onto a rocky summit with 180-degree views of the Pacific and the coastline from Tillamook Head south to Cape Lookout. On clear days you can see the surf breaking at Cannon Beach to the north. Whales migrate past this point in spring and fall, and the headland is one of the best land-based whale-watching spots on the coast.

A story
Spanish galleons wrecked on this coast in the late 1600s, and local Tillamook oral tradition holds that survivors buried a chest of treasure somewhere on Neahkahnie Mountain. Diggers have searched the slopes for three centuries. No chest has ever been found, but the story persists in every guidebook and around every campfire from here to Tillamook.
