Seaside Museum & Historical Society

Local history museum covering the Lewis and Clark expedition, the salt cairn, and the resort town's evolution

A small local history museum a few blocks from the Prom, covering Seaside's history from the Clatsop people who inhabited this stretch of coast before European contact, through the logging and canning industries of the 19th century, to the resort era that defined the modern town. The Lewis and Clark connection is well documented here, including a reconstruction of the salt cairn the Corps of Discovery built nearby to make salt for the return journey.

The collection is modest — a few rooms of photographs, artifacts, and interpretive panels — but the curators clearly care about the material. For anyone who wants historical context beyond the bronze monument on the Prom, this is the place to find it. Admission is inexpensive and the volunteer staff are knowledgeable.
