Carlisle Barracks is the second-oldest active military installation in the United States, and the campus that surrounds it is worth a visit for its history and its handsome Federal-era architecture. The United States Army War College occupies the post — it is the senior professional military education school for the Army, where colonels and generals come to think about strategy.
Civilian visitors are generally welcome on the grounds during normal hours. Walk past the Omar Bradley Museum in the Root Hall building and take in the wide lawns and old brick buildings that give the post a campus-like feel more than a garrison one. The highlight for history visitors is the Hessian Powder Magazine, a squat stone building dating to the Revolutionary War period that now serves as a small museum.
