The Grog

A long-standing bar and gathering place in the Carlisle historic district, The Grog draws a mixed crowd of locals, Dickinson students, and military personnel from the Barracks. The atmosphere is unpretentious, the beer selection leans toward Pennsylvania craft options, and the bar food is solid. It has the feel of a place that has been here for decades and expects to be here for decades more — which, in Carlisle's bar landscape, is something worth valuing.

A story
The word "grog" dates to the British Royal Navy — Admiral Edward Vernon, known as "Old Grog" for his grogram cloak, ordered sailors' daily rum ration diluted with water in 1740. The diluted drink took his nickname. A bar with that name in a town with deep military roots is either coincidence or a nod to a tradition that predates the United States itself.
