Riverfront Park runs for two miles along the east bank of the Susquehanna, from the Walnut Street Bridge south to the Interstate 83 bridge, connecting the town centre to the river that made Harrisburg a strategic location in the first place. The trail is paved, well-maintained, and genuinely pleasant — the river is wide and slow here, and the views across to City Island and the Cumberland Valley hills make it one of the better urban walks in central Pennsylvania.
The park passes through the Capitol grounds area and a string of public art installations. The Walnut Street Bridge at the north end is a 19th-century cantilevered iron truss bridge, now pedestrian-only, that extends partway across the river before stopping where a flood took out the middle section in 1996 — you can walk out above the water and see the gap where the span used to be. The river itself draws kayakers and anglers in summer; bald eagles fish here in winter.
