George Nakashima Woodworkers

George Nakashima Woodworkers is one of the most important design sites in the Delaware Valley. The house, studio, and workshop complex south of New Hope preserves the world of the Japanese-American furniture maker whose live-edge tables became icons of 20th-century craft.

Visits require planning, and it is not a casual drop-in attraction. For travellers interested in architecture, woodworking, or modern design, though, it is more memorable than almost anything on Main Street.

A story
George Nakashima treated wood slabs as collaborators rather than raw material, leaving cracks, knots, and live edges visible. The New Hope complex preserves that philosophy in buildings, furniture, and workshop practice.
