New Hope is the Bucks County river town that turns a simple walk into a full afternoon. It sits on the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware, directly across the bridge from Lambertville, with a compact main street of galleries, old stone buildings, small theatres, antiques, and enough weekend traffic to remind you that Philadelphia is not far away.
The best way to see it is on foot. Start near the Bucks County Playhouse, walk the canal towpath, cross the New Hope-Lambertville Bridge, and double back along the river when the light is better. The town is polished now, but it still has a bohemian streak: artists, theatre people, antique dealers, and day-trippers all share the same narrow streets.
New Hope also works as a base for the lower Delaware Valley. Bowman's Hill Tower gives the big view over Washington Crossing country, the New Hope Railroad preserves the old station and excursion trains, and George Nakashima's studio just south of town is one of the great American places for anyone who cares about wood, craft, and quiet design.
